Queensland Ladies win their second Cup
After two days of non-stop darts the Queensland Maroon Team won the Ladies Peter McMenamin Cup at the Redlands Multi Sports Complex in Brisbane today. This is the second time that the Queensland Ladies have won this title, the last time being back in 2001.
Western Australian Ladies Darts Teams have dominated the Peter McMenamin Cup over the 10 or so years this event has been played but in 2009 they were to miss the final. 2009 saw Queensland dominating. The Queensland Maroon Team (Green Division) won through to the final being undefeated in the lead round robin matches. Queensland Whites biggest challenge came from Tasmania who enforced the only loss to the host state. Tasmania Green was the superior Team throwing great darts to finish undefeated in the Gold Division.
After the round robin Western Australia placed second in the Green Division with just the one loss to Queensland 9 - 3. Victoria placed third losing to both Queensland and Western Australia. In the Gold Division it was the similar scenario. Queensland placed second with the one lose to Tasmania 9 - 5 and Western Australia finished third with loses to Queensland 9 - 4 and Tasmania 9 - 7.
After the completion of the round robin the fight for the title was to be between Tasmania and Queensland. The Queensland Maroon Green Division Team where represented by two local Redlands players Pam Burr and Cathy Shaw, along with Peta Whitlock and Anita Tapau (pictured above) having a sensational victory winning 9 - 6. Queensland accounted for the Tasmanian Green Team (pictured left) represented by Sandra Smith, Helen Johnston, Lee-Anne Faulkner and Chritine Woolley
The final saw Queensland and Tasmania slugging it out early with the legs going with the lead player. Tasmania started with Joihnston winning the first leg. Burr won the second leg making it 1 - 1. After the next four legs the score was 3 - 3. Possibly the matching winning leg was the seventh leg. Pam Burr hit a 180 and finished on double top for a 13-darter to break the lead through. Cathy Shaw backed up by winning the next leg to consolidate the break obtained by Burr. The Tasmania Team is a very experienced group and they had played brilliantly for two days so they were not going to go away easily. Sandra Smith won the next leg and Helen Johnston inflicted a break against Burr in the following leg to get the score back on an even keel at 5 - 5. The Queenslanders raised their game to win the next three legs to be one leg from the title. Christine Woolley won the 14th leg to keep the Tassie Ladies in the final. The 15th leg saw Burr again in a crucial situation, this time finishing from 20 to clinch the title for Queensland for just the second time.
The battle for the Cup in the Men's event was a shootout between Queensland and Western Australia. The Men's competition saw the winner came from the Gold Division where the Western Australia Gold (right) dominated that side of the competition. They won through to the final without losing a single match in the round robin leading up to the finals. Queensland White Team placed second with only the one loss to Western Australia and that match went comfortably WA's way 9 - 6.
In the Green Division the Queensland Maroon Team won through again undefeated. Placing in second place went to Western Australia Black losing just the one round to Queensland 9 - 8. Queensland's Robert Modra hit the winning double in that tie breaker.
With both teams in great playing form the big crowd was waiting in eager anticipation. The final between the Green and Gold Divisions was expected to be a very close contest. Queensland (pictured left) who had been relentless against all opposition was represented by Geoff Kime, Rob Modra, Josh Kime and Stuart Leach. However in the final they were not in the hunt as they were smashed early by WA.
The Western Australian Gold Team consisted of players Damon Heta, Lindsay Haji Ali, Neil Hembrow and Justin Miles (pictured right) had played brilliant darts over the two days. They won the first four legs including a 13-darter by Damon Heta and a 15-darter by Neil Hembrow before Robert Modra was able to win Queensland's first leg. Western Australia won the next three legs to give them a 7 - 1 lead. Queensland rallied a little with three strong legs (Leach 18 darts, Kime 14 darts, Modra 15 darts) to bring the score back to 7 - 4. Lindsay Haji Ali hit his second 180 in the final in clinching the next leg. Geoff Kime kept Queensland's hopes alive winning the 13th leg but young Justin Miles with a 17-darter won the title for the Western Australian Black Team finishing from 42. Western Australia has won back the title they lost in 2008 to Queensland.
