2009 Canberra Labor Club
Australian Grand Masters

Saturday 4th July
The first full day of competition at the 2009 Australian Grand Masters started at 10.30 in the morning with the Ladies & Open Pairs and B Grade Singles.

Munro Memorial Ladies Doubles
The ladies doubles had 20 pairs combinations entered and was played over a two life competition. There was some very strong combinations contesting this event with the final of the first life going to the NSW combination of Colleen Nichols and Lavinia Hogg when they defeated the pairing of Dot McLeod and Louse Ball from WA in the final 3 - 1

Coming through in the second life again say Ball & McLeod reach the final. This time they played Corrine Hammond (NSW) and Natalie Carter (WA), again going down losing 3 - 1.

To the best of seven leg Grand Final, the winners of each life playing off saw the very experienced international pairing of Carter and Hammond too strong for Nichols and Hogg winning in a close contest 4 - 2. Well done ladies, pocketing $600.00 between them.

Gerry Austin Open Doubles
The open doubles was also a two life competition, as we pick up the first life at the finals stage we saw players that live in New South Wales but a long way apart in Andrew Towns (Broken Hill) and Mitchell Clegg from Newcastle win through to the final with a strong 4 - 2 win over two other NSW players in Barry Jouannet and Dean McGladdery.

AGMIn the second life, the winners of the first life Townes and Clegg had made the final again. This time they were up against another strong combination in Queensland's Rob Modra and Kyle Anderson from Mandurah in Western Australia. A 4 - 2 win to Modra and Anderson in the second life final, setting up a reply for the Grand Final.

The Open Doubles Grand Final was played over the best of nine legs with plenty of support for both pairings. This time saw a different outcome with the Townes Clegg combination reversing the previous result to take out the match 5 - 3 and the winners' cheque of $1200.00.

"B" Grade Singles
B grade single is a chance for lower grade players to play, and have a win, without the Premier players knocking them out in the first round. Some players, who don't have the confidence to play in the bigger competitions, went much further than they would have thought. 15 players whittled down to jst four, Kim McLean, Kevin Holland, Meta Reid and Anthony Keevers. In the first semi final Kim McLean was to strong for Kevin Holland winning 3 - 2 while in the other semi final Meta Reid was in good form winning 4 - 0 over Anthony Keevers. This left the final two and what turned into a thrilling close contest Meta Reid picked up a cheque for $240.00 for the victory winning 4 - 3 over Kim McLean.
