Forwood and Fleet claim Grand Masters Titles

Carol Forwood and Anthony Fleet threw brilliant darts to take the Australian Grand Masters titles in Canberra over the weekend. Both the Ladies and Men's fields were extremely strong with a number of international players flying in chasing the WDF and BDO ranking points.

It was a great return to form for both Anthony Fleet and Carol Forward. Both have had success over the years and are big tournament players, with both backing up a win at the Central Coast Australian Classic last weekend. This was the first time for both players to finally grab the Australian Grand Masters title, although going close in previous attempts.

Coca-Cola Open Singles
There were 76 men that turned out for the Coca-Cola Open Singles in Canberra over the weekend chase the first prize of $2,900.00 from the $9,000.00 on offer for this event. In the open singles all elimination games are best of 3 sets, Last 16 and quarterfinals best of 5, semi finals best of 7 and final best of 9 sets.

Anthony Fleet from the nations capital won his first Australian Grand Masters Singles title when he defeated Queenslander Shane Tichowitsch 5 sets to 3 in the final. Fleet averaged over 29 for the day and had some hard matches on his way to the final. In the final Fleet averaged 29.65 and Tichowitsch averaged 28.19. "Fleety' commented that he was rapped to have won this tournament on his own stomping ground. To reach the final Fleet defeated Wayne Weening (Vic) in the semis 4 sets to 2 and averaged 28.04, Weening averaged 22.69. In the quarterfinals Fleet accounted for Andrew Townes (SA) 3 sets to 2 in a great match and averaged 28.86, Townes averaged 27.28. On the other side of the draw Tichowitsch defeated Tasmanian Peter Phillips in the semis 4 sets to 1 and averaged 24.57 while Tishowitsch averaged 28.04. In the quarterfinals Tichowitsch knocked out Kyle Anderson from Mandurah in Western Australia 3 sets to 0 and averaged 28.91, Anderson averaging 25.82.

Ladies Australian Grand Masters
With a roll up of 34 ladies coming from all over Australia and New Zealand, the field in this year Aristocrat Australian Ladies Grand Masters was very strong. There was a number of players that had represented Australia, overseas international tournament winners and offcourse previous winners of this event all chasing the winners' cheque of $1600.00 from the $4000.00 prize pool on offer. The board games are all the best of 3, the semis the best of 5 and the grand final the best of 7 sets.

Carol Forwood of Victoria won her first Australian Grand Masters Ladies Singles title when she defeated last year's winner Corrine Hammond of Sydney 4 sets to 3 in what was a classic final. In the final Forwood averaged 20.51 and Hammond 22.08. It toped off a strong performance by Forwood who had some close matches during the day. She first played in this event in 1983 and it has taken her well over twenty years to finally crack the win. Congratulation Carol. To get to the final she defeated Julie Thomas (SA) in the semis 3 sets to 1 who averaged 20.16, Forwood averaged 21.77 and in the quarters she accounted for Queenslander Pam Burr 2 sets to 1 with an average of 21.47, Burr averaged 20.28. Hammond on her way to the final eliminated Melissa Sinnott from Victoria 3 sets to 0 in the semi averaging 22.25 while Sinnott averaged 18.63. In the quarterfinal beat she final defeated Ballarats Janine Cassar (VIC) 2 sets to 0 and averaged 20.54 while Cassar averaged 17.82.
