The 2010 Geelong Australian Masters Week-End, sponsored by White Eagle House and Puma Dart Products is upon us this, being the 34th year for the means tournament and the 26th year for the ladies tournament, and judging by the number of entries for the doubles which is the first event for the week-end the tournament promises to be a great couple of days of top quality darts.

Once again there is a strong interstate contingent with players from WA, QLD, SA, TAS, NSW, ACT and of course Victoria., with international representation from New Zealand and with friends, partners and supporters we have a crowd of approx 400 "WOW"

The Tommy Brightwell Memorial Doubles for Men attracted 74 pairs and the Pauline Munday Memorial Doubles for Ladies 33 pair.

1st Leg Carol threw first and began with 58, Sandra began her throw with a steady 60, Natalie then followed with 45,then Lee-anne with 60 Carol/Natalie next threw 55/100 respectively, and Sandra/Lee-anne 83/100. Play continued with a top score of 121 for Sandra and a top score of 100 by both Carol and Natalie until Carol hit the peg of 70 in 3 darts to take the first Leg.
2nd Leg. Sandra/Lee-anne began with 45/43 but Carol began the 2nd leg with a 180 and Natalie backed her up with steady darts but Lee-anne and Sandra fought back with Lee-anne throwing a timely 133 and then Sandra pegged the 2nd leg with 87 in three.
DFA3rd Leg Carol began this leg with 95and Sandra with an unlucky 26 could have been in you know where. Natalie followed Carol with a steady 60 for her next three throws. Sandra/Lee-anne kept plugging away with Lee-anne having throws of 82.81,95 & 96 but Carol came to the fore with a 64 peg in three.
4th Leg Sandra opened with 57, Carol with 100, Natalie with 60, Lee-Anne again was close throwing 26 but Carol backed up with 140 and Sandra with 95 Natalie stepped up 100 leaving 64 to peg Carol did not let her down pegging in DFAthree and becoming the 2010 winners of the Pauline Munday Memorial Ladies Singles thus earning themselves not only the title but also Prize Money of $1000.00 with Sandra & Lee-Anne as finalists collected Prize Money to the value of $500.00.

1st Leg Ian won the toss and began with 100, Andrew, Rob & Laurie followed up with 60's Ian & Andrew also with 60 and then Rob the magic 180 and not to be outdone Andrew also with a 180 but took advantage and pegged 97 in three
2nd Leg Andrew starts with 100, Ian with 140 ,Laurie 100, Rob with 87, next throw by Andrew 83, Ian another 140 Laurie 90, Rob 60, before Ian pegs 24 in two.

Scores continue along these lines till Laurie pegs 68 in three.
8th Leg Andrew begins this leg with 115, Ian with 140, Laurie comes up with 118, Rob 43, Andrew 60, Ian 100, Laurie 70 and so on throughout this leg until the peg by Laurie of 28 in one.
9th Leg Andrew wins the toss and starts with 100, Ian 43, and the magic start of Laurie yes 180, Rob then follows up with his 180, Andrew with 76, Ian 121, Laurie 96, Rob 125, Andrew with 97 Ian 60 and then a 52 peg in 3 by Laurie and the Tommy Brightwell Doubles Championships to Andrew & Laurie by 5 games to 4.

Today is the Mens & Ladies singles Event and both carry WDF, BDO & DFA Ranking Points. The weather has slightly improved - no rain - but still a bit chilly.
Entries closed at 6pm on Saturday, players have arrived, partners and supporters are here and again the crowd is around the 400 mark. "LETS PLAY DARTS"

DFATHE GEELONG AUSTRALIAN MASTERS
Play commences at 9.45am sharp and has attracted 125 entries; preliminary rounds are the best of 7 legs.
Two hours and 12 minutes into the first round there was a great buzz around the room, a magical 9-dart game was thrown. The match on Board 3 was between two local players - Tyler Fitch & Clinton Bridge. The 9-dart leg was thrown by Clinton Bridge (right), in the sixth leg. Sponsor Puma Dart Products provides a one off payment of $NZ10,000 to the first player who throws a 9 dart game during a WDF ranked tournament lets hope it is Clinton.

Preliminary rounds continue with some great games being played on all boards.

Pat wins toss and starts with five in 1st leg follows with 100/180/135 and pegs 86. Josh has a nervous start in the first leg.
2nd Leg Pat follows up with great set 100/100/140/53 peg 108 awesome darts. Josh tries with solid 60/60/100/60
3rd Leg Josh throws 100/140 Pat throws 85/81/100 game even Josh hits 100 and leaves 60 finish and pegs
4th Leg Pat hits 140 start and Josh follows up with same Pat throws 60/100/100 Josh hits 83/60/83 and leaves 28 Pat misses 20 peg and Josh pegs 28 with one dart.
5th Leg Pat continues with solid darts Josh also doing the same Pat hits the magical 180 Josh hits 140 to leave 73

7th Leg Again Pat begins with 140/100 while Josh struggles to find his triples but hits 140 on his 4th throw following with 100. Pat leaves 20 Josh 40 but pat hits the double with one dart.

2nd Semi Final - Wayne Weening/Lindsay Wells
Lindsay wins the toss begins with 81, the next throws by Lindsay find him jut not able to find those triples, with Wayne also starting slowly he picks up with a 100/140 and pegs 8 with two darts.
2nd Leg Both players now seem to have their eye in Lindsay 85/85/100/101, Wayne 60/60/87 a 137 then the peg of 40 in one.
3rd Leg Wayne begins with 100, Lindsay with 136 Wayne seems the steadier of the two with throws of 140/140 Lindsay hangs in there produces a 136 Peg.
4th Leg Wayne throws 119, Lindsay 87, Wayne steps in with throws of 60/60/140 Lindsay throws 82/100 and again 136 to leave him a peg of 47 he busts on first attempt, Wayne misses and Lindsay throws true and pegs 47 with his second dart.
5th Leg Wayne begins 140, Lindsay answers with 100 starts then 60/60/60 But Wayne darts are truer with 60/180/89 and 32 pegs in two a 14 dart game.
6th Leg Lindsay begins 81 Wayne 100; Lindsay follows with an unlucky 24, in steps Wayne 100, not to be outdone Lindsay also 100, Wayne 60/100/65, Lindsay 60/140 but Wayne pegs surely with 76 on his third dart.
7th Leg Lindsay kicks off with 100, Wayne 60 Lindsay throws 81 is stiff with 27/15 comes back with 124, while Wayne is finding his targets with 140/125/85/66 and goes on to peg 25 in two.
8th Leg Wayne with 100/Lindsay with 100 ,both players keep within range of each other Lindsay 140/97/85/, Wayne 58/140/79/80 Lindsay pegs 59 with his third dart.
9th Leg Lindsay begins with 69, Wayne 40 Lindsay just missing his triples in this leg, Wayne hits 140/123 in this leg and is the steadier player and goes on to peg 60 in two darts to win the 2nd semi final.

GRAND FINAL - PAT ORREAL (QLD) v WAYNE WEENING (VIC) (BEST OF 15 LEGS)

DFA1st Leg Pat wins the bull and starts hi campaign with 121, Wayne begins his and starts with100, Pat follows with 140 twice Wayne 60/100/60 Pat then throws 90 leaving 10m to peg an does.
2nd Leg Both players started slowly Wayne with 24 & Pat with 45 Wayne threw 60/60/41/60/60/100 just missing triples & Pat 100/60/140/100/36 & peg 20
3rd Leg A 140 from Pat gives him a good start, Wayne follows with 100 Pat 60/140/90/55 & Wayne 41/121/100/123 and attempts an 139 peg just missing leaving 16, Pat pegs16 first and take the leg.
4th Leg Wayne hits 60 to start & Pat 30 Wayne just missing triples by the merest margin, Pat Pat throws 140/100/140 and pegs 91.
5th Leg Pat begins with 100, Wayne with 76 and is more consistent this leg but still off the mark with the triple hitting 125/ four 60's, Pat hangs in there not allowing Wayne to get too far ahead Wayne misses 62 peg & Pat steps to ochre and pegs 2 to win.
6th Leg Wayne has a 100 start and Pat a 140, but this game is pretty even , Wayne 59/140/81/73 & Pat 60/121/100/60 leaving 20 to peg, Wayne just misses his 48 peg leaving 16, no miss for Pat 20 peg.
7th Leg Pate begins 121, Wayne 95, again play is close between the players, Pat with 95/85/100/126 again leaving 20 peg, Wayne 140/85/60/ bust on 121, Pat pegs 20,
8th.Leg Wayne 32/96/59/75/100/47 leaves 92, Pat 36/95/85/100/126 and leaves 20, Wayne just misses the peg and Pat pegs 20 and wins the 2010 Geelong Australian Masters.

1st Semi Final -Best of 9 Legs - Carol Forwood v Pam Burr

Pam begins the 1st leg with 81, Carol follows with 100 Pam is just astray with her darts in her next few throws with Carol being more on target and pegging 52 with one dart.
2nd Leg Carol starts off with 58 and Pam 83,Carol continues with 41/121/80/29/60/48 leaving 64 and Pam with 40/85/96/41/80 leaving 76 to peg.Pam just misses her peg and Carol steps up and pegs 64 with 3 darts.
3rd leg Pam hits 136 to start this leg ,Carol 45 In this leg both players struggle to find their mark and the peg very elusive Pam pegs 10 with her 2nd dart.
4th Leg Great start by Carol 140, Pam with 70 The next five throws by both players keeps them pretty even with 100/102 by Carol & 100/123 by Pam
But Carol pegs 32 with one dart.
5th Leg Pam begins with 76,Carol 60 again this is a very close game but Carol's darts more accurate, Pam very unlucky with high/low scores costing Carol pegs 25 with her third dart.
6th Leg Carol 78, Pam begins with 100 but just misses early before getting together with more even scoring, Carol continues to put pressure on her opponent but finds the peg elusive and Pam pegs 32 with one dart.
7th leg Both begin slowly Pam 50, Carol 22 & then scores very even Pam 's top hits 100/137 in her leg & Carol's 121/97 in her's. Each player has her chances to peg but it is Carol who pegs 8 with one darts & wins the first semi.

2nd Semi Final - best of 9 Legs - Sandra Smith v Natalie Carter
1st Leg Sandra throws first and starts with 95, Natalie begins with 45 and also the same score with her next two throws and then a 123, Sandra's next throw is 79 but also hits the 40's until she pegs with 34 in tow darts.
2nd Leg Natalie starts with 120 but Sandra begins with 133. Both players continue to throw between the 50 & 80 mark and are evenly poised Natalie pegs 8 in one.
3rd Leg Sandra starts 41, Natalie 60 and continues with 60/60/55/60/63 & 119, Sandra continues with 97/97/57/95/40 and 54 both miss pegs until Sandra pegs 20 in three darts.
4th Leg Natalie has a 100 start and Sandra 41 but her next two throws are 133/133, Natalie is just missing the triple box with four throws in the 60's keeping the pressure up but Sandra pegs 32 in tow darts.
5th Leg Sandra begins with 70 & Natalie with 41, this leg proves frustrating to both players as they are just missing their targets. Sandra eventually pegs 20 with her second dart.
6th Leg Natalie hits 85 to start Sandra 41, Natalie next throws are 45/60/36/45/121, Sandra steadies & her next throws result in 99/100/115/41 and comes up with 105 peg in three to give her the 2nd semi final.

GRAND FINAL - SANDRA SMITH (TAS) v CAROL FORWOOD (VIC) (BEST OF 11 LEGS)

DFA1st Leg Sandra wins bull and hits 47 to start the Grand Final, Carol begins with 100. Scores by both keeps them fairly even and neither can forge ahead of the other. Sandra pegs 32 on her third dart
2nd Leg Carol has a great start of 140, Sandra 75, again scores are pretty even but Carol steadies and pegs 20 in three darts.
3rd Leg Sandra 95, Carol 41 Sandra hits a 171 on her second throw, Carol is unlucky on her next three throws then gets back into the game with a 140 Sandra misses her peg Carol hits 70 to leave 40, Sandra pegs 39 on her third dart.
4th Leg Carol very unlucky with her start 6, Sandra 77 again Carol frustrated unable to hit her targets until the fifth walk and hits a 140. Sandra scores are also under the 60's and both have messes with the peg Sandra pegs 20 on the third dart.
5th Leg Sandra 79, Carl unlucky with 26, Scores in this leg are very close and neither player can get a break Carol has left 41 and Sandra 12 Sandra pegs in two.
6th Leg Carol begins with 30, Sandra 95 Carol again is unlucky to hit her targets allowing Sandra who is very solid with scores of 95 twice and 114 leaving 40 she then pegs on her third dart.
7th Leg Sandra 57, Carol 60 but again missing her targets then with a comeback of 140 leaving 99 to finish Sandra who has played steady darts hitting her numbers pegs 20 in three darts and wins the Grand Final.

2010 Australian Masters Week-end is over for another year, It was a great two days of darts played in a friendly manner by all participants and good sportsmanship. Everyone this writer spoke to had nothing but high praise for not only what they believe is the best tournament on the DFA Calendar but also the organizers, the bar staff & kitchen staff.
