Tony David to play in Master of Darts Tournament

Tony DavidAustralian International and former Embassy Champion Tony David is set to play in the Master of Darts Tournament next week. The Master of Darts event is a playoff between four BDO players and four PDC players and he joins such players as Raymond “Barney” van Barneveld and Andy “The Viking” Fordham to name a few. The confrontation between the best players of the two federations has been eagerly pending for several years. This tournament guarantees that there will be a clash between Taylor and Barneveld.

Additionally, Andy Fordham is getting another opportunity to bring to a close his head to head match with Phil Taylor, which he previously had to terminate due to health tribulations. There will be the first televised contest between Barneveld and Roland Scholten.

The make-up of the player groups ensures a unique play-off every evening that has never before been shown on TV. The Masters of Darts organizers are pleased to announce that the last BDO player has signed up for the tournament.

Tournament
In the darting world there are two federations that professional players are affiliated with.
These are the BDO (British Darts Organization) and the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation). Raymond Barneveld is associated with the BDO and Phil Taylor with the PDC. The best players from the BDO and the PDC have never before played against each other.

This tournament, the ultimate face-off, will soon take place next week!

Masters of Darts will take place from Monday February 7th until Sunday February 13th 2005 at the Expo Centre in Hengelo, The Netherlands. The best four players from both Federations have been invited. This is partially made possible because PenH Events agreed to a three-year contract with Raymond Barneveld taking part in this tournament. The remaining seven players have already been contracted.

Unique
Unique about the Masters of Darts is that it is the first confrontation between the best dart players of the world, with full TV coverage. Especially in The Netherlands, is it assumed that Raymond Barneveld is the best player of the world. The players, the darting fans as well as the federations all believe that Masters of Darts will be the most prestigious tournament ever.

ROYAL CONGRATULATIONS FOR BARNEY

BarneyQueen Beatrix of The Netherlands sent a personal letter of congratulation to Raymond Van Barneveld within minutes of his fourth Lakeside World Professional Darts Championship victory.

The faxed letter bearing the royal crown arrived at the British Darts Organisation press office at Lakeside and was immediately translated by the large contingent of Dutch media present for the final.

But that wasn’t the only official gesture by The Netherlands.

The Dutch Ambassador in London arrived in the official embassy car, registration NL 1, and brought with him the Dutch Sports Minister, Clemence van Dorp, who flew over to attend the Champions dinner and congratulate Raymond personally.

A strong supporter of darts, she read Queen Beatrix’s message to Raymond, and then delivered an inspiring and wonderfully supportive speech on behalf of darts.

Chelsea superstar and Dutch International Arjen Robben was also in the Lakeside audience to cheer Raymond to victory.

It was the perfect end to a perfect day for the Dutchman dubbed ‘The Man’. He has now been in five World finals at Lakeside and won four of them. He’s already planning to make it five in 2006.

THESE DARTS ARE MADE FOR WALKING!

As part of the British Darts Organisation application for darts to be recognised as a sport, both Martin Adams and Mervyn King were fitted with state-of-the-art pedometers during the 2005 Lakeside World Professional Darts Championships.

The players wore them to provide evidence that darts is a physical sport, and the results were pretty conclusive. In the 4 days that Mervyn King wore the equipment for practice and match play, he took 13,850 steps.

However, in his successful route to the final Martin Adams took an amazing 33,310 steps – which equates to 25.37 kilometres, the equivalent of a darts marathon!

The figures will now be evaluated by Dr. Peter Gregory, a leading expert at the Centre for Sports Medicine at the University of Nottingham, and will form an important part of the BDO’s application to Sport England for darts to be recognised as a sport.

“This proves beyond doubt that darts is as physical as we have always claimed”, says Olly Croft of the BDO. “There is no way that those competing in archery or shooting could ever achieve figures like these – yet they are recognised as sports.

“Our last application met every criteria demanded by the Sports Council, but we were refused because darts wasn’t considered physical enough. The figures produced by Mervyn and Martin certainly show the opposite”.
