TAYLOR FIRST MASTER OF DARTS CHAMPION

The first Masters of Darts took place from Monday February 7th until Sunday February 13th 2005 at the Expo Centre in Hengelo, The Netherlands. The best four players from both Federations have been invited. In the darting world there are two federations that professional players are affiliated with. These are the BDO (British Darts Organization) and the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation). Raymond Barneveld is associated with the BDO and Phil Taylor with the PDC. The best players from the BDO and the PDC have never before played against each other. Australia’s 2002 Embassy and World Darts Trophy Champion Tony David joined the quest to become the first Master of Darts. The “Deadly Boomerang” was the third Embassy Champion to join the BDO camp. The completed list of BDO players - Raymond Barneveld, Andy Fordham, Co Stompé and Tony David. The first four days of competition saw players playing Best of 7 sets, Best of 5 legs

Day 1
Co Stompé v Colin Lloyd
Dutchman Co Stompé was first up against Colin Lloyd, also being the tournament opener. In the first leg it was already noticeable, Stompé was in great form and the crowd was going wild. Stompé in what was a surprise to many won this game
4 – 0.

Raymond van Barneveld v Roland Scholten
First game for Raymond van Barneveld was against Ronald Scholten; with the first set going the full five legs to Barneveld. Barneveld did not play really convincingly, maybe lacking some motivation. His match would be astonishing nevertheless! However Scholten could not get into the game, he also had room for improvement. Here the final result was 4 – 2 to Barneveld, and the set scores were as follows. 3-2, 0-3, 3-0, 3-2, 0-3, 3-0.

Wayne Mardle v Andy Fordham
This was to be the last game of the first day. The game between Mardle and Fordham looked in the first place as if it would be a strong 4 – 0 victory to Fordham. But after taking a 3 – 1 advantage to Fordham, Mardle suddenly stepped up his game to a higher gear. Mardle took the fourth set with 3 – 2 to score line, clearly giving him more self-confidence. So much that he even claimed the fifth set 3 – 1. But then it was Fordham’s turn to lift his game in the sixth set to clinch it 3 – 0. Fordham winning the match 4 – 2.

Day 2
Three more games on the programme for day two.

Tony DavidTony David v Wayne Mardle
The David Mardle match was the first game of the evening on stage. Tony David lost the advantage early in the first set to be down 2 – 0, but recovered taking the third and also the fourth leg to even up the set at 2 – 2. The fifth leg was now in the advantage of David and won this first set 3 – 2. This apparently produced so much more self-confidence, that David (above) also won the second set. But Mardle was able to raise his gain up a level, and fought back to level at 2 – 2 in sets. But after these two sets David would not conceded any more sets, and strived on to a strong victory. David won this game 4 – 2 and threw an average of more than 30 per dart.

Phil Taylor v Andy Fordham
The second game saw Taylor on stage for the first time. His first game was against the 2004 Lakeside Champion Andy Fordham, and the match looked an even money bet. Of course Taylor knew that Fordham could throw a nice dart, but at this level Taylor was no certainly. Fordham at the halfway stage of the match was throwing an average of around 107 per three darts but in spite of that still lost the match 2 - 4. Fordham hadplayed a classy game: yes with an average of around 107 is nevertheless also simply fantastic. But against the ferocity that Taylor showed he could not do much about it. He had himself still an average at the end of the game of around 105 per three darts. Taylor threw 8 x 180’s against 3 x 180’s for Fordham.

Co StompeCo Stompé v Roland Scholten
The last game for day two was an all-Dutch match. Just like the day before, Stompé was on his game right from the start. While it appeared that Scholten did not look sharp. Stompé, (right) unfortunately after taking the first set 3 – 1, saw his game collapsed a little. Stompé was still in the match but was not able to take another set. It was Scholten who was better on this night. Scholten had delivered, as it happens, winning the match 4 - 1. Scholten threw a three darts average of around 90 and had 2 x 180’s. Stompé threw an average of around 87.6 in this game per three darts.

Day 3
Four more games on the programme for day three.

Tony David v Phil Taylor

On this day there was a shift in the broadcast, and the first game was switched with the last. By this shift, we became immediately faced with an interesting game, namely that of Tony David v Phil Taylor. Already in the first set and at 2 – 2 in legs, it made for an interesting game and possibly of what was to come. But in spite of that David played super darts, he had nevertheless be out played by Taylor. Taylor claimed the fifth leg for the first set and also captured the second set as well. He repeated it again in the third set, with the same score line of 3 - 1. Thus the match stood at 3 – 0 in sets to Taylor. In what was to be the last set he produced great darts again for a 3 – 0 in leg for a 4 – 0 in sets victory. “The Deadly Boomerang” couldn’t keep the pressure on Taylor. That’s when “The Power” usually plays his best darts, and he did just that. A dedicated professional finished the game leaving David completely with no chance at all. The Aussie wasn’t even to blame. He played reasonable, but that is just not enough against Taylor. The averages for Tony David were 89.35 and for Phil Taylor 104.08

Roland Scholten v Andy Fordham
The second game of today had Roland Scholten up against Andy Fordham. It was Fordham whom won the first set 3 – 0 in legs, and continued his good play in the second set taking it 3 – 1. Although Fordham started well, the 2 – 0 lead in sets wasn’t because of the good game of Fordham. His Dutch opponent failed to hit doubles in the first two sets and Fordham seemed on his way to a whitewash. Against all expectations, Scholten suddenly saw his darts hitting trebles, doubles and was winning legs and in the third set it was Scholten who grabbed the set 3 - 2. For Scholten, that just was not enough. He managed to keep up with Fordham but wasn’t capable of overtaking “The Viking”. The fourth set and with the set poised at 2 – 2 Fordham again claimed the set. Set five, and Scholten stepped it up a gear, to take the set 3 – 0, and bring the match score to 2 – 3 in sets for Fordham . Thus the players started the sixth set, with Fordham capturing the first two legs. But Scholten continued fighting and made it back to 2 – 2. Now the last leg of this set saw Fordham to be too strong for Scholten giving him the set and a match win in 4 – 2 in sets. Scholten made his defeat look a little bit better by winning a couple of sets, but “The Tripod” was definitely not happy with his game. Fordham, who made the crowd go wild in Expo Centre Hengelo, booked his second win in three games.

Raymond van Barneveld v Colin Lloyd
Next was the game between Raymond van Barneveld and Colin Lloyd. As easy as one, two, three and four. That’s the way Barneveld won his second game. Colin Lloyd was struggling from the beginning and saw the Dutch number one winning one set after another. “Jaws” knew that his defeat was coming Here the result was not a true picture of the match as both players were far from their best. In spite of match going to Barneveld which was decided with 4 – 0 score line, Lloyd nevertheless was not able to get into the match. Outside the first set where Barneveld won it 3 – 1 Lloyd was there about but came up empty in each set. All sets would become firstly 2 – 2 where upon Barneveld would then claim the set. Barneveld scored here an 89.98 average and 78.80 for Lloyd.

Co Stompé v Wayne Mardle
Then for the final match of the evening, the game between Co Stompé and Wayne Mardle. Mardle, who had lost two games already, was resolute to tackle this match for a victory. Co Stompe was playing a very good match and started incredibly. The first set saw both players win the opening legs with the darts and came down to the deciding fifth leg for the set winner going to S tompé. Then set two was won by Mardle 3 - 0. A fter that, “The Matchstick” was on fire. Hitting the right doubles and trebles at the right time, Mardle could only try to keep the gap as small as possible. That didn’t really work out well for the Englishman. Stompé won the third set 3 – 0 for a 2 – 1 lead in sets. Stompé continued to be first to the doubles, and was hitting them consistently. Further more Stompé made it 3 – 1 and finally 4 – 1. The averages here were 82.37 for Stompé and 84.54 for Mardle.

Day 4

Andy Fordham v
Wayne Mardle
Andy FordhamAndy Fordham (left) played a perfect game today. Fordham started the first game today against Colin Lloyd. The most disappointing results so far are those of Colin Lloyd. He has lost his first two matches without even winning a single set. He managed to win the first set 3 – 0 against former BDO World Champion Andy Fordham in this match . After dropping the first set, “The Viking” was unstoppable for Lloyd. In set two Fordham showed Lloyd what he could do by turning the match around in claiming the second set 3 - 0. The third set, the game standard was lifting, in spite of in the third set 3 - 1 in legs going to Fordham. Then the fourth set where Lloyd was able to win the first leg, where upon Fordham threw out the second. Leg three also went to Fordham, but Lloyd knew by the fourth leg Fordham would be hard to stop but managed to win the leg. But in the fifth leg of this fourth set Fordham with his 15 th dart won the set to go up 3 – 1 in sets. The fifth set went the full distance. Fordham took the first leg, only to see Lloyd take the second. In the third leg Fordham with a 161 finish took a 2 – 1 lead to put him in front. Lloyd took the fourth leg to bring the set score to 2 – 2. Then the last leg of this fifth set and Fordham was able to clinch the leg and the match 4 – 1. Colin “Jaws” Lloyd was not hitting the targets like he should and Fordham, supported by the 3500 people audience, was. After this defeat, Colin Lloyd has lost twelve sets so far, winning only one.

Raymond van Barneveld v Phil Taylor
BarneveldThen for the second game for the night. This was the match that everyone had been waiting for. But it was a quick one between Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor. This was supposed to be the match. The duel. The confrontation that was going to write history. But it wasn’t. There was no exciting battle, there was no deciding seventh set, and there weren’t even exceptional high averages. Now then for the game. Barneveld (right), who switched from Tri-Fin flights to regular flights for this match, was playing at a dramatic level, compared to his regular performances. Taylor played well, but not extremely good. Against all odds, ‘well’ was good enough to win the ‘Battle of the Champions’. The huge crowd was obviously not very happy with the whitewash, as they expected a thriller. Taylor cruised his way past “Barney” and his third consecutive win was enough to make it into the semi finals. Barneveld won the second leg in the first set to level the set at 1 - 1 but Taylor powered in the third and fourth leg to take the first set. In set two Taylor took the first leg but Barneveld fought back in the second and third legs to take a 2 – 1 in the set. Unfortunately for Barneveld, his run did not last as leg four and five went to Taylor which put the score at 2 – 0 in set. Taylor was in control and won the third set 3 – 0. Next to the fourth set and there was little change for Barneveld. Taylor taking the set 3 – 1 for a comfortable 4 – 0 in sets victory. The average for Barneveld was 87.08 and Taylor 94.89

Tony David v Roland Scholten
Game three, and at the end of the night that ended up in a bit of a disappointment, Tony David and Roland Scholten produced a thriller. The first set saw Tony David win the first leg but Scholten wins the second, third and fourth leg. Score 1 – 0 for Scholten . Then the second set and, Scholten looked hard to stop and won the second set, with 3 – 0 in legs score. Set three saw David lift his game up a gear and with some great darts wins his first set 3 - 0. David followed up that set by taking the fourth set 3 – 1 and the fifth 3 – 0 to take the lead 3 – 2 in sets. Both players took the lead in various stages of the match, but the Dutch “Tripod” managed to finish the job. “The Deadly Boomerang” was playing a decent game, but Scholten was showing great darts and the Australian just could not finish the match. Scholten had to win the next set to make sure of playing in the next round. He squared the match at 3 – 3 in sets and then claimed set seven. After an amazing match Roland Scholten had won 4 – 3. Tony David would have made a great move if he won this match, but now that he had lost, he was miles away from a place in the semi finals.

Day 5

The fifth day of the Keukenconcurrent Masters of Darts was going to be a deciding one. Although Phil Taylor and Roland Scholten are the top two players in the PDC Group, and that part of the tournament is ‘done’, the BDO players still have to battle for their places for the semi finals.

Tony David v Colin Lloyd
In this game if David could win he was still in with a slight chance of a possible place in the semi finals. Losing is never fun for a professional darts player, but losing three games and winning only one set, is a disaster. It happened to Colin Lloyd this week. Colin “Jaws” Lloyd has one final shot for at least a close match, and maybe even a win against Tony David. David won the first set 3 – 0 and again a bad start for Lloyd. Lloyd fought back in set two to level at 2 – 2 in legs and then went on to win the set to tie up the match. David could not afford to concede any more sets to make the semi finals. It was noticeable in the third set that David was playing excellent darts . David won the first leg with a great 170 finish, and the second leg he threw a 140 finish. With plenty of confidence he claimed the third leg, giving David a 2 – 1 lead in sets. In the fourth set it was tied at 2 - 2, but here the match slowed up for David with Lloyd throwing out the fifth leg and evening up the match at 2 – 2 in sets. In the fifth set it saw David off his game a little, giving back the advantage to Lloyd who took the set 3 – 1. But David did his name honour of the “Deadly Boomerang” and fought back to take set six and bring the match score to 3 - 3. The match had come down to the seventh set. And Lloyd was hanging in there, until the match was at 3 – 3 in sets, 4 – 4 in legs. It was David who was capable of two magnificent legs at the end. He had won legs eight, nine and ten to win the match 4 - 3. For Lloyd, that was the fourth defeat in a row. The Englishman did play a good final game, but it still was not enough to win.

Raymond van Barneveld v Wayne Mardle
Barneveld and Wayne Mardle played the second game. This was is a very important game as it could determine the pool positions. “Barney” was not playing the best darts of his career in Hengelo. The first match was good, the second one wasn’t but the Dutchman managed to win it, the third match was bad. Barneveld described is as the worst game he’s ever played in his career. Mardle had so far played a really terrible tournament, but wanted to make up for in this match. Mardle also has reasons enough to prove himself and the match against Barneveld is the last chance for the Englishman to make his result look a little bit better. While in the golf cart on their way to the stage Barneveld and Mardle both got hit by glasses of beer, or other drinks. A shocking experience for both of the players, who were not expecting a ridiculous thing like this to happen. But the show must go on, and as professional players they knew that. They played an amazing game, with high scores, massive checkouts (“Barney” finished 170) and a surprising beginning. Barneveld was playing better . In spite of that he was 2 – 0 down in the first set, but fought back winning the next two legs including a perfect 170 finish and was looking at taking the set. But Mardle was hitting the triples also, and won the first set 3 - 2. Mardle looked like he had to play for his life, and took the lead with 3 sets to 1. But Van Barneveld showed great skill, great mentality and great sportsmanship as he turned the match around and won it: 4 - 3.

Co Stompe v Phil Taylor
Phil TaylorThe last game of the night and also the last match of the first round was between Co Stompe and Phil Taylor. “The Power” has nothing to gain in the confrontation with Co Stompe but the Dutchman did. By defeating Lloyd and Mardle, he could still make it to the semi finals but he needs to overcome Phil Taylor for that. Mission impossible you would say. But the Dutch professional was showing great darts and if he can keep up his playing level he could give Taylor a hard time on stage. Co Stompé could look back at a very successful tournament for him so far. In spite of that Stompé got hammered in this match 4 – 0. The Power were simply too strong. The first set was over quickly 3 – 0 for Taylor, the second 3 - 2, then the third 3 – 1 and finally he won the fourth set again 3 – 0. Taylor’s average was 103.64. His English opponent, failing to win one set, had smashed “The Matchstick”. Stompe could hold his head high, as only one player managed to win a set against Taylor. “The Power” was very businesslike on stage. As soon as he could, he went off stage and gave his fans a little ‘thumbs up’. (above)

The players for the semi finals

After 5 days four great players have been eliminated, leaving four players to play against each other for a place in the final. Raymond van Barneveld against Phil Taylor would be first up; the second match was between Andy Fordham and Roland Scholten in the semi finals.

Raymond van Barneveld v Phil Taylor
The previous match between these two had been hyped up by the media last Thursday, but the match turned to be very disappointing. But the players gave the crowd exactly what they wanted to see in their semi final match. Taylor and Barneveld played on almost the exact same level and after five sets, there was still no set break. Taylor was leading with 3 – 2 in sets. Taylor was winning his sets without finding himself in real trouble, but Barneveld hit the doubles at the right time. The sixth set was the deciding set of the match. Barneveld had a couple of bad throws, and Taylor took advantage. His break was the first of the match, and turned out to be the only one. Leading 4 – 2, Taylor had the advantage of starting in the seventh set. “The Power” wasn’t playing perfectly in that set, but it was good enough to guarantee himself a place in the final of Keukenconcurrent Masters of Darts 2005. “Barney” was out of the tournament and can prepare himself for the Tempus International Darts League 2005, the next televised tournament on the calendar.

Andy Fordham v Roland Scholten
The second game again saw the "Netherlands v England" - Andy Fordham v Roland Scholten. Again a "BDO - PDC" and again a place in the final game of the Masters of Darts were at stake. This match was disappointing as it was not even close. Not even a real match. Two former world champions played each other and the difference was shocking. Andy Fordham was producing higher scores, played better on his doubles and got in front with 3 – 0 in sets lead in no time. Scholten was only standing and watching “The Viking” win one leg after another. It took to the fourth set before Roland Scholten was able to win one. But Fordham took back the control of the game in the fifth set, and was leading 4 – 1. A place in the final against Phil Taylor was only one set away for Fordham who entertained the crowd during the interval. The sixth set turned out to be the final one of the day. Andy Fordham took control once again and left Scholten no chance at all. The Dutch professional was out of the tournament; Fordham can prepare himself for the second clash of the week with Phil Taylor.

The final - Andy Fordham v Phil Taylor
The last game of the Masters of Darts Tournament was played between Andy Fordham and Phil Tailor over the best of 13 sets. For the Dutch fans, the best final possible would have at least one Dutch player in it. But most of them will be very happy with Andy Fordham and Phil Taylor though.

Having Fordham and Taylor in the final, not only two world champions enter the stage, but also the two group winners of the Masters of Darts. Phil Taylor was still unbeaten during this event, Fordham only losing one match...Against his next and final opponent: Taylor (2-4). Andy Fordham was probably supported by the largest part of the crowd. Taylor is very popular as well, but the popularity of “The Viking” has no limits in The Netherlands. A huge crowd who all seem to want the same follows the player’s moves: a picture and an autograph. The venue in Hengelo was filled with “Come on, Andy!” and “Lets go, Phil!” lots of fans and hopefully, a great game of darts between two world champions.

Taylor and Fordham

The first set saw Fordham start, but Taylor made the first mini break against the darts taking the first leg. In the second leg Fordham returned the compliment by breaking Taylor straight back. Then Taylor got going winning the third and fourth legs to obtain the first set. Taylor won the second set 3 – 1 and continued in the third set with some outstanding play. It was a copy of the second with the same result, 3 – 1. Taylor had won nine of the first 12 legs to open up a three-set lead over 'The Viking'. To the fourth set, and Taylor again taking the first leg. Fordham then claimed the second leg, and Taylor then won the third. Fordham continued to play impressively winning the fourth leg. With a successful attempt at the bull in the fifth leg, Fordham had drawn a set back, but still trailing Taylor 3 – 1 in sets. Taylor took out set five with a dominate 3 – 0 score line. If Fordham missed Taylor was always there to take the leg. Taylor was playing brilliantly and won set six 3 – 1 to move to a 5 – 1 lead. Taylor had just reeled of six of the last seven legs. Fordham was unable stop Taylor at this stage but he never gives in of course. Fordham, a huge favourite with the Dutch fans, was unable to respond in set seven and Taylor took the set 3 – 1 to move one away from victory. Score then 1 – 6. Set eight would be the last set for Fordham, Taylor took the first two legs and the match looked over. But we know Andy “The Viking” Fordham would continue to fight, and he won the third and fourth legs. But Taylor held his nerve to close out the match with a successful attempt at double 16. Taylor had won 7 sets to 1.

Taylor had won the first Master of Darts title and received a cheque for € 150.000. (above)
