Gulliver misses out at Dutch Open
Saturday 8 February 2003

The Dutch Open appears to be a bit of a hurdle for World No.1 and 2003 Embassy Champion Trina Gulliver (pictured right).
Knocked out in the quarter finals last year by Tricia Wright, Trina was defeated again today in the round of 16 by Scottish Louise Hepburn 3-2

Day three of the Dutch Open saw the second half of the Singles draw played out to the last four players in the Open and Ladies competitions. These four players will meet the four players who made it through Fridays draw on stage on Sunday when all finals will be played.

Big numbers continued at this event with about 6000 viewers and participators watching all of the games. A big stand was erected for all the spectators to get a better view of the action who watched all the matches while the players were competing before the television cameras (SBS6).

Playing format for the early rounds is best of 5 x 501.

On this day we saw the emergence of top players like Trina Gulliver in the ladies event and the Dutch Embassy players Raymond van Barneveld, Vincent van der Voort, Albertino Essers Mervyn King, Steve Coote, and Ted Hankey in the Men's.

Action started on the boards at 11.00 again with early upsets right from the start. Big name players to miss early were Peter Evison who lost in the first round, Mervyn King lost to Swedish player Oberg in the round of 256 as did fellow Englishman Matt Clark losing to Dahlgren from Sweden.

Those to make the quarterfinals were Dutch super star and new 2003 Embassy Champion Raymond van Barneveld (right). He did not make it through without some extremely tough competition.

Nick named "Barney" had could have easily been eliminated early. In the round of 64, Belgians Tanguy
Borra missed 3 darts for victory when he was 2-1 up. Given a chance Barney took that leg, and then produced an 11-dart leg for victory.

The tough games continued for him as he defeated Englishman Colin Lloyd 3-1 in the very next round. Again he won (3-1) to reach last 8 he had to finish a 146 to win the match, against Reinier Schouten who was on 57.

Other big players to miss out losing in the round of 32 were Embassy players John Walton (Eng) and Dutchman Vincent van de Voort.

Four Dutch players are among the last eight players in the Open singles. Three Englishmen and one Finish player join them. The Dutchmen are Raymond van Barneveld, Roland Scholten, Jan van de Rassel, Peter Nederlof, the English Ted Hankey, Terry Jenkins, James Wade and Finland's Jarkko Komula.
