BAVARIA WORLD DARTS TROPHY

Bavaria TrophyVechtsebanen, Utrecht,

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 TH to

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 th, 2004

A number of darts enthusiasts in Australia will be watching all the darts action in Holland for the next 9 or so days over the internet following the performances of our Australian players Tony David and Steve Duke. From Saturday September 4th until Sunday the 12th the 3 rd Bavaria World Darts Trophy will be played. Again the location is the ice-skating arena “The Vechtsebanen” in Utrecht (pictured right). We wish them both well. David arrived in Holland last Sunday and Duke is well on his way.

Oh for some sponsors in Australia like Bavaria. The brewing giant has got right behind this event with some heavy promotion. A huge 7-day promotional tour for the 2004 Bavaria World Darts Trophy with a selection of the darts stars who will be attracting capacity audiences in the massive Vechtsebanen Complex in Utrecht, and on television (SBS-6) in Holland, will be touring in a chauffer-driven limousine. The players include reigning Bavaria World Darts Trophy Champion, Raymond van Barneveld and Dutch crowd favourites, Mervyn King (the 2003 runner-up), Martin Adams, Ted Hankey and John Walton. The world’s best known darts referee and MC, Martin Fitzmaurice will join them.

The tour started last Friday (Aug.27) when the limo collecting the party from Schipol Airport and take them to the Hotel Mitland - the official hotel for players and officials during Bavaria World Darts Trophy week.  This will be filmed and televised by SBS-6 for their ‘Shownews’ programme. SBS-6 cameras will then be following the players throughout the tour, and later on Friday they will give their first media interviews.  On Saturday the players move from the Limo to a specially commissioned boat for a canal tour through Utrecht – when a large press contingent and guests of Bavaria, the main sponsor of World Darts Trophy, will join them.

Then follows a whirlwind itinerary of personal appearances, darts exhibitions, dinners and interview, autograph and photo sessions for seven consecutive days – culminating in a special darts exhibition and dinner at the Bavaria Brewery in Lieshout, home of World Darts Trophy sponsors Bavaria.

The Bavaria World Darts Trophy (BWDT) is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments and is organised according to the knockout system at the Lakeside World Professional Championships in January each year in Frimley Green Surrey. The prize money exceeds a total of € 200.000 (130.000 BP) and the winner of the TrailblazerMen’s event can add €45.000 to his bank account. The winning Lady will become €8.000 richer. Also a brand new car worth €120.000 (80.000 BP (no joke! - right) is available for the first nine dart game thrower. “Car Centre Pietersen/Riva Den Haag” sponsors this car. Also World Ranking Points are to be won. This year 16 points for the Men’s winner.

40 of the World best darts players (men and women) from 11 different countries will be attending. Among them the two winners from last year in Raymond van Barneveld and Trina Gulliver and also other favourites like the current Lakeside champion Andy Fordham, the Winmau World Master Tony West and last years Tony DavidBavaria WDT finalist Mervyn King. Also Ted Hankey and this year Tempus IDL finalist the Australian Tony David (left) will go for the big price. For the ladies title we cannot forget the Rotterdam based Francis Hoenselaar. For the first time ever a Russian will participate in a Dutch Grand Slam tournament. The only 20-year-old Anastasia Dobromyslova showed her skills last year and she is the one to watch!

The best twenty eight men of the World and the six best ladies available form the field of players. Completed with four wildcards for the men and two for the women, the list shows a field of forty of the World finest darts players.

The draw took place on July 8th in the “Academy House” on the Dome Square in Utrecht. A unique location this year besides the 750 year old 350 feet high “Dome Tower”. “The Dutch Tom Jones” from The Hague, Henk de Jager, performed the draw watched by Mayor of Utrecht Miss Brouwer.

The draw shows some interesting first round matches. We will need to say goodbye to a former Embassy winner after the first round. 2000 winner Ted Hankey will meet 2001 champion John Walton. Title defender Raymond van Barneveld will meet New Zealand’s Peter Hunt. They also met each other in 2004’s Lakeside first round.
