DAVID BACK IN CONTENTION
The Sunday afternoon session at the Tempus International Darts
League saw Aussie Tony David get back into the tournament with
a strong win over Shaun Greatbatch. (Left – Tony David welcomed
on stage by MC Martin Fitzmaurice) David lost yesterday to
New Zealander Peter Hunt, so the pressure was on him today
to win or virtually be eliminated out of the event on Monday
after playing Dutch International Co Stompe.
David was in pretty good form throughout this match. He scored
brilliantly and pegged fairly well, although missing a few
mid range pegs near the end of the match. He won the first
leg pegging 8 against the darts. A 180 with his third walk
indicated that he was on target this afternoon.
The second leg saw higher scoring. David hit 78 to leave 40 with Greatbatch sitting
on 170 which he promptly hit to square the match at 1 – 1. |
The third leg again saw David out scoring Greatbatch with some
great darts. Greatbatch hit a 180 on his fourth walk, but it
was to late as David finished the leg with a 67 peg on his fifth
walk with Greatbatch sitting on 65. Yet another break against
the darts. (Right – David wins another leg)
Leg four saw David win the first leg with the darts. Again
some strong scoring by both players. With Greatbatch sitting
on 40 David had to finish, which he did with a 93 pegout. David
was leading 3 – 1.
Greatbatch pulled a leg back in the fifth, pegging 40 on his
sixth walk. David was siting on double top after hitting four
straight tons and 61 but did not get a shot for the leg. |
From this point on David took control of the match. The sixth
leg was not brilliant, but winning this leg gave David a 4 –
2 lead. With his confidence high, he claimed the next two legs
with some high scoring and steady pegging to take the seventh
and eighth leg and the match 6 – 2.
(Left- David takes win from Greatbatch)
As mentioned earlier, crunch game for Tony David now is
his match against Co Stompe Monday night. Peter Hunt defeated
Stompe 6 – 5 today to give him two wins and a place in the
next round. Stompe defeated Greatbatch yesterday so both
David and Stompe are sitting on one win each. The winner
will join Hunt in the next round.
|
David still has room for improvement. He will need to get his
average up into the 30+ ranges to keep going. He is confident
that he can do that and is looking forward to the challenge.
He averaged 29.76 in today’s victory, while Greatbatch averaged
28.69. Yesterday against Peter Hunt (right), David averaged 29.83,
while Hunt averaged 29.68. |
| NO LUCK FOR DUKE
For Steve Duke (pictured right) this has been a forgettable
tournament on the boards for him so far. He has not been able
to get his game going and has suffered two defeats so far.
Yesterday he lost 6 – 0 to James Wade with an average of 25.82.
(Wade 31.31). Sunday evening did not see much improvement.
Duke played Englishman Gary Robson going down 6 – 2. Normally
a consistent high scorer, Duke has not been able to find that
consistency this time round. Today he averaged 26.01 while
Robson managed a credible 29.14.
Duke has only one match left for this year Tempus International
Darts League and that match is on Monday night against the
all-conquering Dutchman Raymond Barneveld. Lets hope Dukey
can find some form and give his best performance in this match
to salvage something from this campaign.

| Highlight of the day: England's Darryl Fitton registered a
fantastic 38.05 average in his 6 - 0 demolition of fellow countryman
Davy Richardson in today’s opening match. |
