N.T. has new Aussie Mixed Pairs Champions

Players were competing for the Australian Junior Mixed Doubles Championship at today’s action packed 23rd Puma Australian Junior Darts Championships at the Altona Sports Club in Melbourne, resulting in new Australian Mixed Pairs Champions.

The players were placed into four pools with a combination from each state in each pool. They played a round robin of matches with the top two placing from each pool moving into the quarterfinals.

After pool round robins matches were completed those to make it through to the quarterfinals were:
Pool A: Josh Kime and Brie Peters (QLD) (6-12) topped the Pool winning all of their match and were joined in the quarterfinals by Dwayne Seabourne & Jackie Upston (TAS) (5-11) who lost 2-1 to Kime & Peters in their round robin match.

Pool B: Damon Heta & Danielle Kenny (WA) (6-12) were undefeated in topping this Pool, with Allan Spence & Kathleen Logue (NT) (5-11) placing second after one lose to Heta & Kenny 2-1 earlier.

Pool C: Very close competition in this Pool with everyone losing at least one match. At the end of the round robin topping the Pool were David Clegg & Cindy Parrott (NSW) (5-10) and in second place Shannon Patterson & Jenna Griffiths (SA) (4-10).

Pool D: South Australians Tristan Angel & Kylie Langmair (6-12) came through the round robin unscathed. Joining them in the quarterfinals were Queensland’s Shaun Bracken & Pare’-one Matson (4-9) who lost a couple of close matches.

The Semi Finals say some great darts, not reflected by the averages. Two pairs from South Australia, one from Queensland and one pair from the Northern Territory made it through the quarterfinals in pursuit of the title.

The first semi final saw some nervous players but South Australia’s Shannon Patterson & Jenna Griffiths make the grand final with a comfortable victory over Shaun Bracken & Pare’-one Matson (Qld) 3 – 0.

The second semi final saw some real close action with another South Australian pair in Tristan Angel & Kylie Langmair defeated by the Northern Territory combination of Allan Spence & Kathleen Logue 3 - 2. This was a great game, a pity one pairing had to lose.

The final was played in front of a large crowd. There was some good support for both pairs, which made for an exciting match. The South Australia’s pair of Shannon Patterson & Jenna Griffiths just dropped off their semi final form a fraction while the Northern Territory combination of Allan Spence & Kathleen Logue were able to maintain that semi final mode. Spence and Logue won the first two legs with Logue pegging both. The South Australian players were able to lift their game in the third leg in which was very tight. Patterson pegging 60 to get them back into the final and make the score line 2-1 NT. Both combinations started strongly in the fourth leg and each pair was coming down neck and neck making a very exciting final. To end the fourth leg, Allan Spence pegged double top with his third dart to clinch the title 3 – 1.

Allan SpenceBoth combinations were so evenly matched in the final with Spence (left) 19.348 matching his opponent Patterson’s average of 19.752, while Logue 16.50 also matched her opponent in Jenna Griffiths who finished with an average of 16.633.

Kathleen LogueFor Kathleen and Allan they have won their first national title. They went pretty close in winning this event last year, dipping out at the semi final in Brisbane. 17 years Kathleen (represented NT on six occasions at junior level) and 15 years Allan (4th representation) are a product of the Tennant Creek Darts Association and both have represented the Northern Territory at Australian Junior Darts Championships for a number of years. This is Logue’s (right) last junior championships and was rewarded for her efforts over those six years by recently representing Australia at the World Cup in France in September 2003 and returning to Australia a World Champion.

Congratulation to you both – Kathleen Logue & Allan Spence Australian Champions
