Peters claims title at second attempt

Brie Peters, representing Queensland for only the 2nd time became the new Australian Junior Girl’s Singles Darts Champion when she defeated Cindy Parrott from New South Wales. She is only the second girl from Queensland to win this title, the other being Kim Fels back in 1989. Peters averaged 17.892 per dart in the final winning 3 legs straight to take the title from Parrott who averaged 16.197. After a shaky start both players could not find the peg. Eventually Peters moved away to taking the first two legs. Parrott played strongly in the third leg, but Peters pegged 68 to claim her crown.

Brie PetersBoth girls had impressive wins in their semi finals to make the final. Aged 13 years and from Toowoomba, Peters (right) win in that semi final 3-0 over Australian representative Kathleen Logue showed she was in great form, and she continued that form to win her first Australian Singles title. A very bright future for this young talented player and it may not be long before she makes it into the Australian Youth Team.

17 year old Parrott representing New South Wales for the third time had a tough semi final against fellow New South Wales compatriot and doubles partner on Monday Belinda Vellanff. Vellanff, the 16 year old is also representing for the third time played bravely throughout the day to make the semi finals after spending the night in hospital with illness. This match went the full distance with Parrott winning 3-2.

The Girls qualified for the quarterfinals by either topping the seven-player ‘pool’ or placing second. There were four ‘pools’ and each player in each ‘pool’ played a round robin against all players in that ‘pool’

‘Pool A’ had Kathleen Logue (NT) (5 wins-10 legs) finishing top and Simone Keogh (SA) (4-10) second advance to the quarterfinals. ‘Pool B’ had our two finalist participating in the same group. Brie Peters (QLD) (6-12) topped the pool; with Parrott second (5-11). Peters defeated Parrott 2-1 in the fifth round. All of the players in ‘Pool C’ lost at least one round. Jenna Griffiths (SA) (5-11) finished in first place with New South Wales player Tania Walker (4-10) second. Final group ‘Pool D’ saw Belinda Vellanff (6-12) finish the round robin undefeated topping the pool, with South Australian Kylie Langmair (4-10) filling the final quarter final spot.

Kyle finally cracks Singles title

Kyle AndersonAustralian Youth Team representative at the recent World Cup in France Kyle Anderson (WA) (right) won his first Australian Junior Darts Singles title today when he defeated Rhys Mathewson of Tasmania 3-0. It has taken him a few years to finally clinch this title after going so close for a number of years. He was a finalist in Perth in 2000 and Adelaide in 2001, and a semi finalist in 2003 in Brisbane. He has now emulated his brother’s feat by winning this title. Kyle’s brother Beau won the Australian Junior Singles in 1999 and 2000. This performance today fills Anderson’s trophy cabinet as he has now won every Australian Junior title at least once.

Anderson averaged 21.782 per dart in his victory over Rhys Mathewson (18.30). When the final started you could hear a pin drop in the hall. Both players started strongly with Anderson winning the first leg. Mathewson jumped out to a lead in the second leg, but Anderson hit a 180 to set up a chance at winning the second leg. Mathewson had a chance at winning this leg and was sitting on double one when Anderson finished the leg. Anderson’s confidence was obviously up now, throwing another 180 and pegging 90 to clinch the title with a 17-darter final leg. A brilliant career lies ahead for this 16 years old who is representing Western Australia for 5th time.

Rhys Mathewson may feel a little disappointed at losing today’s final, but this 15 year old has the time and the talent ahead of him to give the title another shake over the next few years. Representing Tasmania for the third this year, he also now has experience at this level on his side.

The boy’s competition was very tight in several Pools. In “Pool A’ Trenton Phillips (WA) (5-10) topped the group with just one lose and a much improved 15 year old player in Adrian Spain (NT) (4-9) placing second. Kyle Anderson (6-12) was undefeated in ‘Pool B’ and as with the girls, the other finalist Rhys Mathewson (TAS) (4-9) was in this group of players. ‘Pool C’ was incredible with three players finishing on equal points which meant a tiebreaker was required. Shannon Patterson (SA), Damon Heta (WA) and Matt Mullen (QLD) all finished with 5 wins and 11 legs. After the tiebreaker Shannon Patterson was the unlucky player not to advance to the quarterfinals. Justin Miles (WA) (5-10) topped ‘Pool D’ with Dwayne Seabourne (4-9) who happened to defeat Mullen in the round robin also advanced. Seabourne had to survive a tiebreaker against last year’s Champion Josh Kime though to make the quarterfinals.

Highlighting how close these players are in talent, all quarterfinal matches went the full five legs to find a winner.
