NSW just to strong in Junior Darts Teams Events
New South Wales Junior Girl’s
Darts Teams continue to dominate the 24th Puma Australian Junior
Darts Championships at the Latrobe Youth Centre in Latrobe
today. The Teams competitions was completed today with the
New South Wales Girls Teams winning the title of Australian
Girls Teams Champions for the fourth time, the last being back
in 1988. This broke the run by the Queensland Girls who had
won the title for the last three years.
A
very tight Girls Teams Championship in 2005 made for some very
exciting darts being thrown by the girls. OK New South Wales
won the title but they really had to fight for it this year.
Day two saw South Australia come out and play great darts to
upset the two favourites. First up South Australia easily defeated
Western Australia 7 – 2. If that was not enough they followed
that match in the next round up by defeating the other undefeated
Team in New South Wales (left) 5 – 4. That meant that every
team had lost at least one match.
Moving in to the final round of this event just one leg was
separating the two Teams with WA having that advantage. It was
not going to have much bearing on this match though as the winner
would be Champions.
The New South Wales v Western Australia match was very close.
The WA Girls won the first two doubles legs, only to see NSW
claim the next two to square up the match. NSW’s Belinda
Vellanff won the first Singles against Patricia Gary 2 – 0,
while on the board next to her Hannah Williams also won against
Ashley Charchalis 2 –1. Only requiring won more point for
the title Terri Parrott won her single against Kirsten Nunn finishing
on double eight. WA’s Tarmeka Nestor won her single against
Kylie Walker to bring the match score to 5 – 3. The NSW
topped off a great couple of days taking the final teams leg
hit 20 to finish the match against WA 6 – 3.
Captain Janelle Wilson was in charge of this team for the first
time as was the Manager Teresa Hore a former junior representative
herself and the players did them both proud. They were Belinda
Vellanff, Tania Walker, Kyle Walker, Terri Parrott and Hannah
Williams.
Wilson said after the match, “This is
fantastic. I was so nervous. I knew it was so close between all
of these teams.
“I could not have asked any more of the players. They
gave me 100%, even when we were down they never gave up and fought
back hard. I have been standing behind these girls all week so
far, but that last match I just had to sit down. I’m just
blown out.” Wilson said.
Unbelievably after that lose for Western Australia play had
not finished for them. South Australia had snuck up on them and
had tied them on wins and legs, which required a tiebreaker to
separate the two Teams. All players play in the tiebreaker of
one leg 1001 so it is cut throat. South Australia were first
to hit the double giving them second place and Western Australia
were in the hunt for the title at one stage yet half an hour
later had slipped to third.
Captain for South Australia, Mavis Nicholson was a late replacement
for the Team. She has many years of experience at senior level
as a player and Captain, but this was her first time at Captaining
the South Australian Junior Team. The Team composed of players
Simone Keogh, Kylie Aay, Kerry Dunn and Kylie Coulson. Nicholson
said, “I’m very happy for these Girls. They put in
a big effort today and they triumphed. The win over Western Australia
this morning lifted the confidence of the girls and it just improved
from there.”
Western Australian Captain has been Kerry West and she said
of her Team, “As a Team of four Rookies and one player
who had previously competed at a Championships, I couldn’t
be more proud of the performance of all the girls. Kirsten Nunn,
a three time rep proved invaluable with her experience gave her
all, Ashley Charchalis gave 100% at every turn, Trish Gray impressed
with her coolness and attitude at the board, Tarmeka Nestor showed
why was here with some brilliant pegging, and Rebekah Lupton
although not put a dart to the board was an invaluable team member
.
Fourth place went to Queensland, fifth to Victoria and sixth
to Tasmania.

Western Australia Boy’s win undefeated
The Western Australian Boy’s clinched the Boy’s
Teams Event, winning back-to-back-to-back titles. This is the
third year in a row the Western Australian Boy’s have won
this event and as in 2004 completed the 2005 competition undefeated.
This is the fourth time the Western Australian Boys have won
the Teams since competition started back in 1980. Western Australia
defeated a gallant New South Wales in the final round today.
Entering the final round, both New South Wales and Western
Australia were both undefeated. There were a number of legs separating
the two teams, so this was going to be a terrific of a match
as this was for the Championship.
Unfortunately the Western Australian Boy’s Team (left)
showed their class in the final and it was all one-way traffic.
The pairs of Anderson & Carpanoni, Heta & Wyatt were
outstanding in all pairs games played. After the doubles Western
Australia were up 4 – 0. The first of the singles matches
saw WA’s Rookie Robert Carpanoni up first against Kyle
Munro. The Rookie started a bit shaky but got his game together
as the match went on making the score line 5 – 0. On the
board next to him Damon Heta was playing Mitchell Clegg. A couple
of experienced players here in this match up but Heta was unstoppable
winning the first leg in 14 darts including a 180 and the second
leg in 18 darts. The points went to WA again and they gave them
a 6 – 0 lead in the match, enough points for the win and
the title was theirs. In the remaining singles Kyle Anderson
was too strong for David Clegg (18 & 17 darts 1x!80) and
Kyle Wyatt defeated Andrew Sica to make it 8 – 0. To top
off the match the Western Australian won the Teams leg as well
when Heta finished on 20 for a clean sweep 9 - 0.
Betty Hislop said, ”I am so proud of all off our players.
They are simply fantastic. They are so easy to manage and they
all played well through out this event. The Teams Event is a
top competition and even though we had two 9 – 0 wins,
the games were still tough often going to three legs. Kyle Anderson
has played great darts and has given the benefit of his experience
to our Rookies. Damon Heta has given his usual good performance.
Credit has to be given to the three Rookies. Robert Carpanoni
is a real find who has played top class darts with grit and determination.
Both Brendan Phillips and Kayne Wyatt have shown they are good
enough to be around in juniors for a few years to come.”
The WA Team, Captain Betty Hislop and players Kyle Anderson
Damon Heta, Robert Carpanoni, Brendan Phillips and Kayne Wyatt
were far too strong and consistent for all the other teams. This
team highlighted the strength of junior boy’s darts over
the last few years in Western Australia with three of these players
contesting this years Australian Darts Championships having several
more chances at representing there state in future years. It
was the last year for World Youth Champion Kyle Anderson and
his Pairs Champion partner Damon Heta.
The New South Wales Team was Captained by Roy Christopher,
Manager Norm Walker and the players consisted of Kyle Munro,
Mitchell Clegg, David Clegg, Andrew Sica and Jake Saramaga placed
second with only the one loss to Western Australia. Apart from
Western Australia, the New South Wales boys were rarely challenged
on the scoreboard.
Christopher said after the match “ I’m so proud
of all of the Boy’s. They have had a great two days of
close competition in the Teams event, but unfortunately Western
Australia was just to strong for us today. I just cannot express
how wrapped in what they have achieved”
Placing third was South Australia (6-26). Captained by Steve
Letts, players competing for South Australia have been Aaron
Kocjancic, Luke Warren , Daniel Lill and Daniel Thomson . They
suffered defeats to Queensland on day one and lost to Western
Australia and New South Wales today. They won more legs than
fourth placed Queensland (6-23) and fifth placed Tasmania (4
- 28).
