Back-to-back Australian Junior Darts Singles Champions.

Day four of the 24 th Puma Australian Darts Championships at the Latrobe Youth Centre ended with 2004 Girls and Boy’s Champions winning back-to-back Singles titles in 2005 at the Australian Junior Singles Darts Championships. 70 of Australia’s best junior players contested the Girl’s and Boy’s Singles event.

Peters claims title No.2

Brie PetersBrie Peters, (right) representing Queensland for only the 3rd time became the 2005 Australian Junior Girl’s Singles Darts Champion when she defeated Belinda Vellanff from New South Wales. She is only the second girl from Queensland to win this title, the other being Kim Fels back in 1989. Peters averaged a very impressive 21.169 per dart in the final winning 3 legs straight to take the title from Vellanff who averaged 19.347

There were no nerves for these two seasoned campaigners. This standard of this final was equal to any ladies open event at senior level. Vellanff had the lead of shot and they matched each other shot for shot to the double. Both wasted a shot at the double in the first leg but Peters finishes on 20 to claim leg one. The second leg with Peters away was chased all the way by Vellanff matching scores, but this leg Peters knocked in a 40 finish to go
2 – 0 up in the best of five leg final. Vellanff had to win the third leg to stay in the final and she was away first. This leg saw the 2004 Champion bring out the big scores leaving Vellanff a little behind. With 60 left Peters stepped up to the oche and nailed it with three darts to finish an 18-dart leg and claim the Australian Junior Singles title for the second year in a row. This 14 year old from Toowoomba in Queensland had represented Queensland at this level three times and has already claimed two singles titles. The opportunity is still there for her to compete at another three Championships, so who is to say how many singles titles she may end up winning by the time she turns 18. What a wonderful talent.

Belinda VellanffDisappointment for Vellanff (left) with this being her last Championships. She has improved greatly over the last four years and has got closer to the singles title each year. She was a quarterfinals last year and now a finalist, capping off a great career in junior darts.

The semi finals were a lot closer than the scores indicated. The first semi final saw Vellanff defeat South Australia’s Simon Keogh 3 – 0. Both players matched each other for scoring but the difference between the two players was the cleaner finishing of Vellanff. Keogh had her chances in every leg but missed those opportunities.

As in the first semi final, you could write the exact some lines but change the names. Peter’s was wasting darts at doubles but Victoria’s Jessie Breneizeris was not taking those chances Peter’s was giving her. Peters scored a little better than her opponent, but Breneizeris had darts at the double in every leg. 3 – 0 to Peters to make her second final in two years.

The Girls qualified for the quarterfinals by either topping the seven-player ‘pool’ or placing second. There were four ‘pools’ and each player in each ‘pool’ played a round robin against all players in that ‘pool’

‘Pool A’ had Terri Parrott (NSW) (4 wins-10 legs) finishing top and Kirsten Nunn (WA) (4-9) second advance to the quarterfinals. Nunn had to survive a playoff with Kylie Langmair, as they were equal on points and legs at the end of the round robin. ‘Pool B’ had Brie Peters (QLD) (5-11) topping the pool, with Penny Gritty (VIC) second (5-10). All of the players in ‘Pool C’ lost at least one round. Simone Keogh (SA) (5-11) finished in first place with Western Australian Patricia Gary (5-10) second. Final group ‘Pool D’ saw Belinda Vellanff (6-12) finish the round robin undefeated topping the pool, with Victoria’s Jessie Breneizeris (4-8) filling the final quarter final spot after defeating Queensland’s Monika Clare in another tiebreaker.

Anderson Brothers have now both won two Singles titles

Kyle AndersonAustralian Youth Team representative at the last World Cup in France Kyle Anderson (WA) won his second Australian Junior Darts Singles title today when he defeated Dwayne Seabourne of Tasmania 3-1.

Anderson (right) has had tremendous success in this event over his six-year career at Australian Junior Darts Championships. It took him a few years to finally clinch this title after going so close for a number of years. He was a finalist in Perth in 2000 and Adelaide in 2001, and a semi finalist in 2003 in Brisbane. In 2004 he emulated his brother’s feat by winning this title. In 2005 Kyle has matched his brother again by winning back-to-back titles. Brother Beau won the Australian Junior Singles in 1999 and 2000. This performance today fills Anderson’s trophy cabinet even having won every Australian Junior title at least once.

Anderson averaged 22.804 per dart in his victory over Seabourne (21.670). When the final started you could hear a pin drop in the hall. Everyone was anticipating a great match with the locals in full support and everyone marveling at the ability of Anderson. Both players started strongly with Anderson winning the first leg after hitting three big scores to set an advantage at the finish. He just missed a 122 finish but cleaned up 7 on his next shot to win leg one. He started leg two with two scores of 140 to take away the lead off advantage Seabourne had. Seabourne was still in this leg though leaving 30 from 110. Not enough though as Anderson hit double 20 with his second dart and the leg was his. Seabourne was in trouble with the best of five legs final in Andersons favour having the lead in leg three. Anderson faulted at the finish in this leg having five darts to finish off from 40. Seabourne jumped at the opportunity and broke back to have the final at 2 – 1 and a chance to tie it up with the lead in leg four. Both players started leg four hitting big scores consistently. It came down to the double and both wasted darts trying to finish off the leg. Anderson was trying to finish from ten and Seabourne from twenty. Both had four walks to polish off the leg with Anderson finally hitting four to take the leg and the final. Both were feeling the pressure at the end, but it was such a great game the entire 140 strong crowd was on the edge of their seats.

Dwayne SeabourneSeabourne (left) had thrown great darts all day and although disappointed he must have been happy with his performance. For the second year in a row a Tasmanian has been pipped at the final, with Rhys Mathewson just missing out last year. Seabourne will have another opportunity next year and if he keeps improving at the rate he has over the last twelve months, he will be in the hunt for next year’s title.

The semi finals saw some great action. Seabourne had all of the locals behind him. He played magnificent darts to defeat Victoria’s Travis Richards (15 years) 3 – 0. He won those legs in 22, 20 and 24 darts. His darts were straight with each shot and moved successfully around the board if he blocked the triple twenty. This was Richards first Championships and can be very proud of his performance. He was sitting on a double in two of the three legs ready to pounce if Seabourne missed.

The other second semi final was a real cliffhanger. 15-year-old Rookie Robert Carpanoni from WA took it right up to his teammate and World Youth Cup Champion Anderson in this match. Carpanoni had the venue watching every dart as he took a two-leg lead to have the Champion in trouble. But Champions are known to fight back and that is what Anderson did. He won the third leg in 20 darts, and lifted again in the fourth leg to tie the match at 2 – 2 with an 87 finish in 18 darts. The deciding leg saw Anderson leading off. The scoring was close coming down with Carpanoni scoring 99 to leave 18, with Anderson sitting on 56. Under pressure the Champion came through finishing off the leg to move through to the final. A great match which everyone enjoyed.

The boy’s competition was very tight in several Pools. In “Pool A’ Dewayne Everett (TAS) (5-11) topped the group with just one lose and South Australia’s Luke Warren (4-9) placing second after throwing a 15 dart tie breaking leg against Ben Gaiter of Queensland to advance to the quarter finals. Kyle Anderson (WA) (6-12) was undefeated in ‘Pool B’ and Dwayne Seabourne (TAS) (5-11) also made it through. His match with Anderson was very close with Anderson finishing on double five in the final leg with Seabourne had 20 left. To highlight how tight this competition was, Anderson was the only player to get through the round robin stage without losing a match. ‘Pool C’ was really tight with four players in contention. Damon Heta (WA) (5-11) ended up on top one leg clear of Tom Pourau (NSW) (5-10). Just one win behind them were Mitchell Clegg (NSW) and Aaron Kocjancic (SA) with both on 4 wins and 9 legs. Travis Richards (VIC) (5-11) topped ‘Pool D’ with WA Rookie Robert Carpanoni (5-10) who happened to defeat Richards in the round robin also advanced. Tassie Rhys Mathewson was a little unlucky in this Pool with 4 wins but lost 2 games with a 2 – 1 score line.
