WA Rookies become Aussie Mixed Pairs Darts Champions
Players were competing for the Australian Junior Mixed
Doubles Championship at today’s action packed 24 th Puma
Australian Junior Darts Championships at the Latrobe Youth
Centre resulting in new Australian Mixed Pairs Champions.
Western Australia dominated the Mixed Pairs Championships with
three pair’s combinations making the semi finals. Unfortunately
good teammates played each other, but this match was for the
chance at a national title and both pairs were competing for
their own bit of glory. Kyle Anderson & Ashley Charchalis
(WA) played Damon Heta & Kirsten Nunn (WA) in the first semi
final. Both boys were knocking in the big scores while the girls
were also matching each other. Heta & Nunn were away first
and won the first leg. The next three legs went to Anderson & Charchalis,
all very close legs with the first down to the double winning
the leg. The fourth leg saw the pressure on with both pairs just
missing the double. Charchalis finished from 18 and they were
into the final.
The second semi final saw Queensland’s Ben Gaiter & Brie
Peters take on another WA pairing in Robert Carpanoni & Patricia
Gary (left). This was a great contest with the WA pairing winning
the first two legs. Great clean finishing by Carpanoni in those
two legs. Gaiter & Peters were not going to give up with
out a fight. The WA pair just went off their game a little and
the Queenslander’s grabbed the next two legs to tie the
match up. The deciding leg saw Gaiter & Peters away first
but the WA pair regrouped and the big scores were back. Queensland
had one dart at the double first but missed, giving a chance
to WA. With his first dart at double 10, Carpanoni hit the double
and they were into the final.
The final was played in front of a large crowd. With both finalist
combinations from Western Australia it was no interstate rivalry
but the excitement was still there. Chippy Miller called the
players to the Finals Board and all were expecting a close match.
It was a great final with all players bring their game up onto
the stage. Carpanoni & Gary started proceedings and it was
the boys that were throwing the average scores while the girls
were making the big shots. They were neck and neck when Carpanoni
stepped up with 112 left to score. He stepped and nailed the
pegout to take leg one. The boys started to fire up in leg two,
but again Carpanoni finished the leg, this time on 56. They Carpanoni
and Gary were won leg away from the title. Anderson stepped up
needing to get back into the match and hit 180. He had a great
leg following the 180 with 125, 100 and a 70 finish to drag a
leg back. In leg four Anderson & Charchalis continued their
run and claimed the leg when Charchalis hit double 10 with her
first dart at the double. Now the final was really on with one
leg to play for the title. All but Anderson were Rookies at Australian
Darts Championships and the pressure was starting to mount on
all of them. Anderson was handling alright and kept the big scores
coming. From 134 Anderson left 24, Gary scored 92 to leave 93
and Charchalis had a chance to take the final. She could not
find the double leaving Carpanoni (right) a chance at finishing
the leg. He stepped and hit the 93 required to win the title.
It had been a great close match that could have gone either way
with the final score being 3 – 2.
Both combinations were so evenly matched in the final with
averages being for all players: Robert Carpanoni (20.538) & Patricia
Gary (20.571), Kyle Anderson (25.819) & Ashley Charchalis
(15.147) All are 17 years of age apart from Robert Carpanoni
who is 15 years and has a few more years in junior darts.
