DFA Juniors

Queensland grab first title.

Juniors 2008The success of the Queensland Junior Darts Team continued on from where they left off in 2007 winning again today at the 27th Australian Junior Darts Championships at Gloucester Park in Perth. They proved too strong and consistent in the Australian Youth Fours for every other team in the Girl's competition while in the Boy's they had a very close battle with South Australia.

The Australian Youth Fours was introduced into the Australian Junior Darts Championships for the first time in 2007. The format is similar to the Peter McMenamin Cup played at Senior Australian Darts Championships with the only difference being each State has only one Team. The new event was very successful with every player really enjoying the concept of the game and the quick pace at which the event is played. Every player had plenty of darts to throw. It gave Captains an opportunity to see how well their players were performing and those states with five players were able to swap a player at the start of each round if they wanted too.

Brie Peters, Rebecca Webster, Chelsea Owens and Kayla Kennedy again showed their darting style once again in winning the first event on the program at this year Australian Junior Darts Championships. They were able to hold off any challenge that was put up to them today backing up the title they won last year. They completed the round robin event undefeated but it took to the last round to claim the title as they had to defeat Tasmania who had just two loses up until the last round to clinch the title. Had Tasmania won they would have been forced into a tiebreaker situation to decide the Champions between Queensland and New South Wales. Queensland won most of their round robin matches comfortably except for the game against South Australia who put a scare into them forcing the match to a tiebreaker to find the winner.

NSW GirlsThe New South Wales Girls Team (right) placed second at the end of competition. Representing New South Wales were Emily Austin, Amy Clegg, Kayla Holland, Melissa Sica and Melissa Murray. They suffered just the one lose to Queensland in the fourth round.

The battle for third place was decided on legs won difference. Three teams finished up with two wins each. South Australia won the battle with 2 wins and 38 legs from Tasmania 2 wins and 34 legs and Western Australia with 2 wins and 33 legs. Unfortunately the Victorian girls could not get a win on the board finishing in 6th place.

The better performing players in this event were Brie Peters and Rebecca Webster from Queensland, Lauren Seabourne from Tasmania, Emily Austin from New South Wales, Bianca Kocjancic from South Australia, and Jucinta Dann from Western Australia.

Qld BoysRight from the start of the Boy's event Queensland (left) and South Australia looked like the Teams to beat. South Australia was very impressive early winning their matches strongly against New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland. In the fourth round SA were upset by Victoria to inflict its only lose and bring them back to the field. Queensland also started strongly winning against Western Australia and Victoria but lost its only match against South Australia in the third round 9 - 7. There last two rounds were good contests against New South Wales and Tasmania winning both matches. South Australia won its last round against Western Australia to finish with four wins, the same as Queensland. The leg difference between the two teams was just one leg in Queensland's favour. This did not matter though as in this event you only count the wins to find the winners. A tiebreaker was required to find the Champion Team. A cruel pressured situation for one player from each team who would play the tiebreaker over the best of three legs to find the victor. For South Australia Matthew Lukat stepped up to the oche and for Queensland Nathan Paice. Paice won the first leg against the darts finishing in 25 darts. Lukat fought back immediately to return the compliment breaking back winning the second leg in 24 darts. The whole event had come down to just one leg of darts. Paice was away first hitting the winning double with his 22nd dart while Lukat was waiting for his chance with 52 left. The title went to Queensland with Nathan Paice, Harlee Chauntler, Mitchell Browning and Robert Braid playing great darts all day.

SA BoysSouth Australia (right) represented by Matthew Lukat, Bradley Evans, Bradley Vine and Michael Conlan finished in second place with 4 wins and 42 legs, Victoria third with 3 wins and 36 legs, New South Wales fourth Tasmania fifth and Western Australia sixth.

Player to shine in today's event were Mitchell Clegg from New South Wales, Jamie Miles from Western Australia, Nathan Paice from Queensland and Matthew Lukat from South Australia.
