 Coolbellup Open 2010
Sunday 28th February found us at the Cooby Hotel for the "Coolbellup Open", this event was until this year our opening ranked event here in the West now it is third on the list following the West Coast Classic and SSDA Wyatt Shield.
It was great to welcome Don and Pat back to the Cooby after a hiatus elsewhere, they along with partner Glenn McLeod are very experienced with the darts crowd, know what they want and give it to them, with the expectation of loyalty and support from those involved in the sport whether as a player or administrator.
We where a little worried about numbers for the event as it is a long weekend in the West however the players showed up in the mood for darts. (Though the ladies numbers are a bit of a worry)
Seventeen ladies registered for the day 11 open and 6 "B".
Open players played in two groups 1 x 6 and 1 x 5 format round robin board draw 501 best of 5 first 2 qualify for knockout round.
Results group 1:
1st Shirley Corker, 2nd Deb Powell, equal 5th rankings Dot McLeod and Jucinta Dann.
Results group 2:
1st Kim Kelly, 2nd Louise Ball, equal 5th rankings Natalie Carter and Cheril Coffey.
Semi-finals format 501 best of 7.
First semi-final: Shirley Corker v Louise Ball.
Might not show on paper but this was quite a good game both Shirley and Louise were hitting the numbers and the peg's early on but then Louise class shone through and she claimed the match 4 - 2.
Averages Louise 73.15 - 23.22pd; Shirley 58.36 - 19.14pd.
Second semi-final: Kim Kelly v Deb Powell
Once again do not be mislead by the score line Kim had to fight Deb off all the way in this match some very good and close games with Deb being a little unlucky with the pegs, Kim's match 4 - 1.
Averages Kim 65.79 - 20.16pd; Deb 59.43 - 19.48pd.
Final format 501 best of 9. Louise Ball v Kim Kelly.
Both Kim and Louise have been playing good solid darts all day so this should be a good match.
Louise gets away to a flyer taking the 1st & 2nd legs on her 6th walk, Kim gets a break in the 3rd leg when Louise misses 16 out with 3 darts on her 6th walk again Kim slams 50 to claim the leg, Kim misses opportunities to claim the next 2 legs and Louise takes advantage to skip out to a 4 - 1 lead, Kim again takes advantage of a rare miss by Louise to claim the 6th leg, 7th leg and both Louise and Kim miss an opportunity to claim the leg early Louise however gives no second chances and claims the leg and the match 5 - 2.
Averages Louise 80.30 - 24.84pd; Kim 76.73 - 22.83pd.
Ladies "B" Grade:

Averages Kyle 91.38 - 28.64pd; Justin 81.86 - 26.48pd.
Second quarterfinal: Kim Lewis defeated Adam Rowe 3 - 2.
A close encounter this one both players produced some top darts and the game could have gone either way Kim however snatched the final leg and the match
Averages Kim 83.77 - 25.13pd; Adam 84.81 - 27.26pd.
Third quarterfinal: Beau Anderson defeated Chad Stack 3 - 2.
A very good game of darts this one Chad could consider himself a little unfortunate in going down to Beau in a very tight affair.
Averages Beau 88.56 -27.00; Chad 89.68 -28.02.
Fourth quarterfinal: Glen Harper defeated Peter Sutton 3 - 1.
Good honest game of darts Glen has been consistent all day and Peter has also played well, Glen however proves to be the more consistent of the two and claims the match and a spot in the semis.
Averages Glen 73.11 - 22.17pd; Peter 70.00 -22.52.
Semi-finals format 501 best of 7.
First semi-final: Kyle Anderson v Kim Lewis.
Kim is renowned player and is capable of pulling of the big games, Kyle though is playing great darts and just seems to be getting better, he powers away with the first 3 legs with Kim just not able to get a shot at a double, he comes flooding back in the 4th leg with a brilliant game to peg 117 on his 5th walk, Kyle then turns up the wick in the 5th to claim the leg and the match 4 - 1.
Averages Kyle 91.04 -27.09pd; Kim 83.40 - 26.80pd.
Second semi-final: Beau Anderson v Glen Harper.
It's been a long time since I've seen so much of Glen he was at one time one of our bright young hopes but then through circumstances' faded from the scene for quite a while, he has however bounced back during these past 3 ranked events and is improving each outing. Try as he might though he was outclassed in this match by a ruthless Beau who burnt the boards for a 4 - 0 win.
Averages Beau 91.09 - 26.72pd; Glen 69.50 - 23.16pd.
Final format 501 best of 9: Kyle Anderson v Beau Anderson.
The Brothers Anderson back in the old days there were the Brothers Grimm who wrote a pity good story, it is indeed a grim story if you run into either of these brothers. Both Kyle and Beau have been in outstanding form for so early in the year so we look forward to a tight, tense game. Kyle leads the way and in a blink has a lead of 3 - 0, Beau hits back to claim the 4th leg but just cannot get his game going in this match and Kyle powers away to claim the match 5 - 1.
Averages Kyle 92.68 - 27.46pd; Beau 69.14 - 22.60.

Final format 601 best of 9.
Final: Merle Morfitt and Ceasar Vinciguelli verse Dot McLeod and Clifton Beauchamp.
Up to this point Dot and Clifton have been smashing the boards with some great scoring and top pegging meanwhile that good old girl Merle and her partner Ceasar had been doing the business of winning some fine games of darts.
Merle and Ceasar win the 1st leg with some very good darts, Dot and Clifton hit back to claim the 2nd leg.
From then on in though Ceasar and Merle never look back, combining well together to string 4 legs in a row to win the event, Dot and Clifton were thereabouts every leg but just could not hit the double when needed or the big score. Great entertaining game of darts and especially great to see one of our genuine legends of the game in Merle Morfitt having a brilliant day on the boards.

To our host and sponsors for the weekend Don and Glenn especially thank you very much from one and all, we all hope and trust that you remain at the Cooby and keep it as a darts pub forever and a day, it's really great to have you back. To the staff at the Cooby for their service and attention thank you.
